The
view you're looking at, is the North West side of Pikes Peak (14,110
ft). Devil's
Playground is to the right and gets its name from the
way lightning jumps from rock to rock along this formation. Some have
speculated that this electrical activity could only be caused by the
devil himself. In fact, this is one of the most electrically
active zones on the planet, experiencing thousands of lighting strikes
a year. The switch backs, at an altitude near 12,000 ft climb foolishly toward the Devils Playground is not only
traveled by thousands of tourists year round, but is challenged each
year by hundreds of speed freaks knawing their way to the top,
in 600+ horse powered vehicles, traveling at speeds of up to 130
mph!
